I'm in the same boat as Roberto in that there's no string for "SerialPort" as described in your posting. I have installed the WMDC update but am still unable to sync via Bluetooth.

Any further suggestions greatly appreciated!

Yes, I have everything in place: Vista, WMDC, Toshiba Bluetoosh stack. I never had Activesync in this machine because I made a clean install howevert the SerialPort entry is not in the registry. I just have this entries: AppMgr, AutoStartOnConnect, AutoStartOnDisconnect, ExtendedSerial, Http Server, ProxyPorts, Services, Specialdefaults but no SerialPort.

Select Windows CE Services in the left hand pane (of RegEdit). In the right hand pane look for the String value SerialPort.

I mistakenly included that in the path above. The path should be HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services only.

Hope that helps.

Your help is really appreaciated. I was able to find the SerialPort string. As you mentioned, the activesync service is now listed in the mobile device. However when I load WMDC, I wasn't able to sync.
In the conection setting windows of the WDMC appears now that Infrared connection are allowed(Allow conections to one of the following box=Infrared). I choose to change it to Bluetooth but it doesn't syncronize either.

When I open again the registry, the SerialPort entry is back to "bluetooth" instead of "COM7" as I just put two minuts ago.

Regards.

Change the setting to Allow connections to "Bluetooth" in WMDC. Then open Regedit and verify that COM7 (or whatever your incoming BT serial port is) is still listed in the registry (WMDC may have changed it back to Bluetooth). Make sure you have the right COM port! The Toshiba BT stack seems to create a large number of COM ports - but only one works :-)

Now restart your machine. To connect over Bluetooth, I use the smartphone rather than WMDC. If you open ActiveSync on the Smartphone, under the Menu key there is an option to "Connect Via Bluetooth". I use that to initiate the sync.

When setting up the partnership all I get is a "Dial Up Networking" profile (no ActiveSync) in the Toshiba Bluetooth Manager. On the phone the only service is shows is "Serial Port".

Please, can you tell me how to get "ActiveSync" to show up as a service?

I'm on Vista, running WDMC (though ignoring it), have Toshiba v5.0 stack installed, using HTC SDA. Have done the regedit above, reboot, etc. You can see an image here: http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=419196932&size=o

I would love it if you could help me fix this. I would just love to no longer have to plug my phone into the USB to sync.

re: Vista's WMDC and syncing your Smartphone over bluetooth with the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack

Hi,

Do not setup a partnership using the Toshiba Bluetooth Software. That allows you to see what services the phone can offer to the host machine - not the other way around.

On the phone, when configuring the partnership, you only see "Serial Port" if the above has not been configured correctly. Until you change the registry key to the correct COM and reboot, you will only see Serial Port on the phone.

So, in the Toshiba Bluetooth software, verify that you have Incoming Serial Bluetooth Port enabled. Then change the reg key to be that COM port (usually COM7, but it could be something else). Now restart your computer. On the phone rescan the services offered by the host. Instead of Serial Port, you should now have ActiveSync instead.

HTH

The Microsoft bluetooth stack does not support some profiles (e.g. A2DP). So if you want stereo sound over BT, then you have to use a third party stack (Toshiba, Widcomm etc). But if you don't need that extra functionality, you can use the Microsoft BT stack if you want.

I accidently deleted your comment when cleaning up blog spam.

If you are having problems synching with Exchange over USB (but it works over Bluetooth), then it may be because you have "advanced networking" enabled. This creates an IP network over your USB cable, but without bridging across to your machine's internet connection, you won't be able to reach your Exchange server.

To turn this functionality off - go to Settings -> Connections -> USB to PC -> and uncheck "Enable advanced network functionality.

I don't have a Palm Treo, or a Fujitsu tablet, so I can't comment on the specifics of your situation unfortunately.

Firstly:

a) verify the incoming COM port. The Toshiba BT stack creates a bunch of COM ports. On Toshiba laptops, the default incoming port is COM7 (and the others are outgoing ports), but on your laptop it might be something different

b) Make sure you reboot after you make the change in the registry

c) If you have already paired the Palm and the Tablet (and you can only see the "Serial Port" rather than "ActiveSync" then make sure you hit "refresh" on the services page when you go to reconfigure the devices (i.e. after setting up an initial partnership, you need to go through the wizard to setup a paired device, and hit "refresh" to get the ActiveSync service to show up)

Good luck!

1) I have installed WMDC, Toshiba BT stack 5.10.06, running on Vista.

2) I have followed instructions exactly as above. So yes, I have found the Serial Port registry entry, and changed it from "Bluetooth" to the COM port that Toshiba assigns to the device. I have immediately rebooted.

3) After reboot, yes, I have re-paired the device. And, yes, I initiated the pairing from the Windows Mobile device. (I am using an imate K-Jam.) And, yes, I have checked the COM port assigned by Toshiba Bluetooth stack for the re-paired device matches the one I had initially set.

However, when I *do* repair from the K-Jam, the "ActiveSync" service does not show up. I click 'refresh' on the PDA and only the "Serial port" service shows up again, and not the ActiveSync service.

I'm astonished that something so standard as the combination of a Windows Mobile 2005 device, Windows Vista, and latest Toshiba Bluetooth stack, simply do not work to allow me to synchronise my data wirelessly!

Come on Toshiba, sort it out! Include support for the ActiveSync service!

If anyone has anything useful that is not covered in the above tutorial, please do say!

(I don't mean to sound snippy, and I do appreciate 'free support' in this manner, but just frustrated with the software itself!)

re: Vista's WMDC and syncing your Smartphone over bluetooth with the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack

lets take a look on the problem:
1.-my ppc (qtek 2020, windows mobile 2004, windows bt stack)) connect with my pc (vista ultimate) over widcomm bt stack. that means no problem on both bt stacks
2.-no connection on wmdc via bt, even configuring it to accept bluetooth connections, but no problem via usb cradle. that means no problem with vista firewall.
so, lets think about: when i connect ppc bt, some services appears on pc bt: activesync, obex, voice gateway... But wmdc works over serial port. Resuming: wmdc needs SERIAL PORT. ppc offers ACTIVESYNC. More problems: activesync software allows to choice com port to connect bt to. wmdc not.
SOLUTIONS:
1.-as i ve read on the net: modify registry values , so we can tell wmdc which com port must be used to connect bt. this com port must be the same one assigned to activesync service when ppc is connected to pc bt stack. in my case: COM5. So, a bit of regedit, look for HKLM\software\microsoft\windows ce services\serial port, and change value, which is usually bluetooth, writting COM5 instead (or whatever com port you have assigned to your activesync service).
then save, close regedit and reboot pc. reconnect ppc and let bt stack add new bt devices so we can reconfigure bt ppc services in order to:
2.-this is my finding: once ppc found, go to select which services we want to use onn bt, select activesync and click over configuration. in the new window, you can change the name of the service, that obviously is activesync and put a new name: Serial Port. and voila!!!. open wmdc on pc, open activesync on ppc, click on connect using bluetooth and youll see how wonderfully wmdc connect with your ppc.

re: Vista's WMDC and syncing your Smartphone over bluetooth with the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack

Hi Mat,

I'm at a bit of loss to explain what you are seeing in your setup. I've got this configured on about half a dozen PCs now (a couple of mine, plus several colleagues). As well, it seems that various other people have also been able to get it working.

One thing I did notice - if you open the WMDC connection properties for the device after you have made the change, WMDC changes back to it's previous setting. So don't fiddle with that.

Otherwise, it should work. The only thing I had to figure out on each PC was (a) was Toshiba stack configured to provide serial port profile, and (b) what was the incoming COM port (out of all the various COM ports that get created)

If you do find a solution to your issue, please post it because I'm quite curious to know what needs to be configured for your setup to work!

Thanks

There should be one COM port listed as LocalCOM-Server. If there isn't just click on Add to add one. Make sure it is a server, not a client. That COM port is what you need to use at the registry of the WMDC. You can also select it directly from the WDMC (for Vista, v6.1) application under "connection settings".

I did that before, and it worked. However, now I don't see the ActiveSync service anymore from my cellphone (HTC3125), only the serial port service (and wireless stereo service). I am also unable to discover my cellphone from my toshiba laptop.

Any idea why that can happen?

I have no problems when I use my office computer which runs XP (and not Vista). Do you think we can file a class lawsuit against Microsoft for the time loss in using Vista compared to XP? It was not my choice to put Vista - once Vista came out they stopped shipping new laptop with XP, to the request/demand of Microsoft.

re: Vista's WMDC and syncing your Smartphone over bluetooth with the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack

Removing and reinstalling the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack solved the problem ... for now ...

re: Vista's WMDC and syncing your Smartphone over bluetooth with the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack

Thanks for the awesome tip! I was able to use my phone with the wmdc for a month or so, but after that again it would only show "Serial Port", no "ActiveSync". Tried changing ports, restarting computer and phone, reinstalling bluetooth stack and wmdc - nothing worked.

Then I tried to remove the toshiba bluetooth stack and install the microsoft stack instead ... and finally ... it worked!

How to do it?
1. Uninstall the toshiba bluetooth stack.
2. Download from the toshiba website the "bluetooth monitor" (not the stack), and run it. This will create a directory c:\toshiba\BTmonitor
3. Restart the computer
4. Go to the directoty "c:\toshiba\BTmonitor" and execute the executable that is there. This will install the microsoft stack.
5. After the installation set the bluetooth to visible/discoverable.
6. Through the new stack, add an incoming com port. (not sure if this step is necessary).
7. At the wmdc/connection settings choose to listen on "bluetooth" (not COMx)
8. Restart, wait for all the software on the computer to load
9. From the mobile's bluetooth search for the computer and choose the "ActiveSync" service.
10. Choose connect via bluetooth in the active sync application on the mobile.

Good luck!
