Just did a quick test, and it seems that you can't schedule a backup with this device (at least not yet). For some reason the Backup tool doesn't think it's an external USB drive, but rather removable storage (which makes sense, sort of...)

hard drives are cheap, have a bigger capacity... space isn't really an issue... just think drives are a better option...

re: Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V backup (Dell RD1000 review)

Hi Mike,

The RD1000 does use hard drives :-)

But what are you suggesting? If you want to be able to restore to a point-in-time, then you need to keep a reasonable number of backups. So that means either having tapes, or disk-based devices like the RD1000, or a large NAS.

The alternative is lots of individual disks in individual enclosures. And that might be fine for a SOHO type outfit, but a PITA to manage

I always get calls from my tape clients because eventually the tape or the drive itself has a problem. I have installed a few RD1000's and I have noticed that clients never call with issues. It just works. For smaller amounts of data I now purchased USB flash drives with a small extension cable. Customers are very happy with this too.

re: Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V backup (Dell RD1000 review)

The alternative is lots of individual disks in individual enclosures. Tapes are still cheap and easy to transport. They can be reused or not as necesasry and I an much happier my data is not going to be hacked or lost in a bank vault than on an on-line store somewhere.
